Spectral Edge Raises $5.3 Million for Image Enhancing Technology
Spectral Edge, a Cambridge, U.K.-based startup developing image enhancing technology, has secured $5.3 million in Series A funding from existing investors Parkwalk Advisors and IQ Capital
The company's technology, which can be embedded in software or silicon, is designed to improve photographic imagery in real-time on mass-market devices such as smartphones, security cameras, and drones
The funding will be used to grow the R&D team and develop real-world apps for smartphones, webcams, and security applications
Spectral Edge is already working with IT services provider NTT data to incorporate its technology into their broadcast infrastructure offering.
ProblemTechnology
"Smartphones struggle to take good photos in low light, with resulting images often having poor white balance and excessive blue or yellow tones. Current solutions for bokeh processing (creating a blurred background effect) also often produce unwanted artefacts."
Solution
"Spectral Edge uses a mathematical technique and machine learning to enhance photographic imagery in real-time. Their technology can be embedded in software or silicon and can improve the quality of pictures and videos on mass-market devices, enhancing low light smartphone images, improving security camera footage, and even improving drone camera images. They are also developing a product called Eyeteq that helps people with color vision deficiencies experience better video quality."
