Winnow Raises $7.4 Million to Fight Food Waste
Winnow, a UK startup that develops smart kitchen tech to reduce food waste, has raised $7.4 million in a Series B round co-led by Circularity Capital
This follows a $3.3 million Series A round in January 2016
Winnow’s technology helps commercial kitchens reduce food waste by making them 'smarter' through the use of smart scales and an accompanying tablet app
The startup estimates its 600-plus clients are saving 4,300 tonnes of food waste annually through the use of the Winnow system
Winnow’s founder and CEO, Marc Zornes, believes that for-profit companies can be a force for good and that technology can be used to improve the food supply chain.
ProblemTechnology
"Commercial kitchens waste a huge amount of food, costing them 5-20% of their food budget. This is a major environmental issue and eats into their already thin margins."
Solution
"Winnow has developed smart scales and an accompanying tablet app that let kitchen staff easily log what food is thrown away. This data is then uploaded to the cloud, analyzed by Winnow's algorithm, and disseminated so that food waste can be reduced. This typically cuts food waste in half within 12 months, reducing food purchasing costs by 3-8 per cent."
