WaveOptics Raises $16 Million for AR Optics Technology

  • WaveOptics, a UK startup building waveguide-based optics for augmented reality hardware, has raised $16 million in Series B funding from previous investors Octopus Ventures, Touchstone Innovations plc and Robert Bosch Venture Capital GmbH, along with new investor Gobi Ventures

  • The company is working with some large tech companies on AR hardware and the first products are likely to hit the market next year

  • WaveOptics focuses on building optics technology that can be used across different hardware, which they believe could change the rulebooks for where AR can be used, and how it can be used

  • They believe that being able to address performance, form factor and scalability is what sets them apart

  • This round of funding comes on the heels of significant business wins for WaveOptics and is one of the biggest of the year for AR startups out of Europe.

"AR headsets are either too bulky, have poor performance, or are too expensive to make."

      Solution

"WaveOptics is developing a new type of AR optics that is smaller, more performant, and cheaper to produce than existing solutions. Their technology is based on waveguide optics, which uses hologram physics and photonic crystals to create a more compact and efficient display."
