Sky Invests $45 Million in Southeast Asia Streaming Service iFlix
Sky has made a $45 million strategic investment in iFlix, a Netflix rival in Southeast Asia
The deal will see the two companies work together to identify areas of future collaboration
iFlix has also taken an undisclosed sum from Indonesia-based TV and content company Emtek Group, via its subsidiary Surya Citra Media, hinting at an expansion into Indonesia
iFlix, which operates in Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines, was founded by Catcha Group and Evolution Media Capital, and has raised $30 million in funding from Catcha, PLDT, and Jungle Ventures
The company is looking to expand across Asia and into Africa, Latin America and other emerging markets
Netflix went global in January, but much of its popular content is restricted in many of its new launch countries, leaving an opportunity for iFlix and other regional players to offer more dedicated programming.
ProblemMedia and Entertainment
"People in emerging markets like Southeast Asia don't have access to the same quality and quantity of online streaming content as people in developed markets. This is because of things like limited internet access, lower disposable income and difficulty paying for streaming services."
Solution
"iFlix provides a subscription-based streaming service that offers a wide variety of movies and TV shows, tailored to the preferences of people in emerging markets. iFlix also offers features such as offline viewing and lower subscription prices to make it more accessible to people in these markets.
