Orthonika Secures £150k Seed Funding for Knee Meniscus Replacement
Orthonika, a spinout company from Imperial College London developing a novel knee meniscus replacement, has launched with £150k in seed funding from a group of angel investors
The company, a collaboration with Sierra MedTech, a specialist in engineered substrates for medicine, was formed to further the advancement of the meniscus substitute into a product
The project, led by Professors Andrew Amis and Justin Cobb, has gone through several prototypes since design work began in 2009.
ProblemHealthcare
"Millions of people suffer from knee injuries, and the current options for treating damaged menisci, including surgery, are not always effective. Existing knee meniscus replacements are often made of rigid materials and don’t function like the natural tissue, which can lead to complications and additional surgeries."
Solution
"Orthonika has developed a novel knee meniscus replacement that is designed to mimic the structure and function of the natural meniscus. This is achieved by using a biocompatible and flexible material that is engineered to provide similar structural support and biomechanical properties as the original tissue, leading to improved outcomes and fewer complications."
